When David Klauber of Julian began writing a book about his great-great grandfather Abraham Klauber, he had no idea just how much research he was getting himself — and his family — into.  “Five years into it I realized I had to stop,” he says. “There is so much California history I was exposed to in the midst of doing the research for this book that there will be other books I have to write.”  Meanwhile, his hard work on his book, “The Sounding,” has been recognized. The San Diego Book Award Association recently honored Klauber with a first place award in the history category.
The SDBAA is a volunteer organization that honors the best published books and unpublished manuscripts by San Diego County residents each year.  “The award means a lot and I am really glad to receive it,” he says.
His book has also been awarded an honorable mention at the Hollywood Book Festival, and was displayed at the San Diego Public Library 44th Annual Local Authors Exhibit, held in February.
“The Sounding” is available on Amazon.com and all other major book-seller sites. A second edition in paperback is nearly ready for release. For information about the book, call David Klauber at 760-420-5437 or visit www.coulterridgepress.com.

Volcano Country Store history told in book

- By Kathy Fellure, Ledger Dispatch contributor

"David Klauber recently ignited the Amador County Historical Society's meeting at the Volcano Amphitheatre with a fireworks presentation worthy of a Fourth of July grand finale."

The great-great grandson of Volcano pioneer Abraham Klauber recounted the historical journey of his forebear with the kind of fire and passion America's early immigrants brought to our distant shores.

                                                 4 out of Four Stars (****) ...

"The Sounding" (Coulter Ridge Press) by David M. Klauber is a wonderful exception to this all-too-frequent norm in family historical biography. The book garnered a runner-up award for nonfiction at the 2009 Hollywood Book Festival. An engineer by trade, Klauber has provided a well-written, cohesive and interesting history of his great-great grandfather, Abraham "Abe" Klauber."

New Book Puts a Different Face on on Gold Rush Era  By Regina Elling

Ramona Journal Article

His life story reads like a Hollywood adventure movie. In fact, his life was so unusual that parts of it can be found in numerous movies and episodes of the television show Bonanza.

But it wasn’t until Julian resdient David Klauber took five years to research and write down the life of his great-great-grandfather, Abraham Klauber, his family began to realize just how special their relative really was.

“Growing up, I heard all kinds of stories about him,” he says. “And parts of his life actually had been documented by some family members. But no one had ever put the whole thing together

The Sounding Announced in the San Diego Jewish World

Biography of Abraham Klauber, S.D. pioneer, now available

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—The Sounding, a 544-page hardcover book telling the story of a 19th century Jewish immigrant crossing the Atlantic from Europe, then the isthmus of Nicaragua to reach the Pacific, and eventually building a life and business in California, has been published by David Klauber, who worked on the project for five years.

The book deals with how Abraham Klauber built an empire in Nevada, hauled goods over the Sierra passes, and with his involvement in the Pony Express and as a 69er and founding father of "New Town" San Diego. Abraham Klauber (1830-1911) was devoted to family, lived a dream and left a legacy for many generations to come. The book has many relevant chapters on events in San Diego County.

Author David Klauber is the great-great grandson of Abraham, and a resident of Julian, California, in the eastern portion of San Diego County.

The Sounding, The Saga of a Merchant Adventurer in the Gold and Silver Rush mining Camps of California and early Nevada Territory, 1830-1911, is now available in a limited 1st edition at an individual price of $45, a 30% savings over the list price when it becomes available on Amazon and Barns & Noble etc. Quantity discounts are available.
